How is coaching different from other professional interactions?

Coaching is none of these – it is helping to identify the skills and capabilities that are within the person, and enabling them to reach their full potential.

How does professional coaching work?

Professional coaching uses a range of communication techniques that can seem very simple. Coupled with the coach’s experience and personality, they prove to be very powerful in attaining results:

  • objective setting
  • targeted restatements
  • listening
  • questioning
  • clarifying

These techniques help coachees to shift their perspectives and thereby discover different solutions to achieve their goals. It is meant to provide an opportunity for individuals to grow and reach their full potential.

How to know if you have a good professional coach in front of you?

A good coach should be asking important questions that set off light bulbs in your head.
A good coach should listen actively to and help you focus.
A good coach should be able to sum up what you are telling him/her in a way that sheds new light to your situation rather than just repeating what you said.
A good coach should challenge your thinking, in a straight-forward yet gentle manner.

Last but not least, a good coach should be your sparring partner, someone you trust and with whom you can share your challenges and thoughts. Someone that will not judge you or be a threat if you open up. Your coach is going to be the person you may open up to “without risk” and your best supporter, so make sure you choose yours well !
