You don’t have to stay in a job that’s not right for you

If you are contemplating a new job or career change, the year end is the perfect time opportunity to reflect on your past experience and think about which direction you want to take in the future. You don’t have to stay on your current career path or in a job that’s not right for you. So, why is it so difficult to change?

Why people stay in unfilling jobs

There are many good reasons why people stay in unfilling jobs but more often than not, it is the lack of a clear idea of an alternative. Clarifying your career objectives and thinking about what you want for the future, will provide the necessary basis from which to define a realistic career strategy and an actionable plan. This will also give you new positive energy that will make you lead the change you want to see happening.

A feeling of true alignment

What I love to see when working with my career coaching clients is when things become clear and they experience the feeling of true alignment. In a nutshell, when clarity is gained on the way forward, it becomes easier to define what needs to be done to make it happen. And the magic starts when I see my clients start living, thinking, communicating and acting to reach their career objectives. Because the more they show alignment and energy, the more their environment starts “responding” positively too.

Time for a career change

In my practice as a career coach, I see this happening on a regular basis.

I remember one client whose motivation to work and energy was getting lower by the day. He KNEW he had to change, to evolve, to do something else, to leave his current company. He had an idea, a dream of working in a different industry, but he just couldn’t sum up neither the energy nor the time to do something about it.
After a first contact and then then several months of trying to drive the change on his own, he took the decision of embarking on a career coaching programme. We started working together and soon his career strategy became clear as well as did the ideal way forward. With a reworked CV, Linkedin profile and some networking tactics, he felt confident enough to start networking in this new sector he’d been dreaming about. To cut a long story short, he got in touch with several people, one of which ended up introducing and sponsoring him for the “perfect job”. Here is the message I got a few weeks later :
“My first few weeks in this organisation have been amazing. It is an incredibly fascinating place to be and I have the added bonus of knowing exactly why I get out of bed in the mornings. I look into the future and think of all the things I can do in this place.“

How will you make sure THAT NEXT YEAR WILL BE different from the others ?

You don’t have to stay on a career path or in a job that is not right for you. If you’ve made the decision to change something in your career, then start now ! If you feel you don’t know where to start or you recognize there is a risk that you may lose your momentum tum, it might be an idea to ask for help to clarify exactly what you want (people often don’t know), define the way forward and ensure that you actually take concrete actions

Don’t let another year slip by!
