Questions to ask yourself before changing career

coaching change career transition important questions

When changing careers is on our minds, there are often more questions than answers. And these questions often challenge what we do and, why and how we do it.
Our clients often face this challenge : “Doing the same job somewhere else doesn’t make sense, so, if I leave my job, what shall I do?”

Specific situations – similar questions

Each person’s situation is unique, and every individual comes with a set of questions. The answers also differ from situation to situation. However, some similarities in the questions arise when thinking about a career transition.
For example :
why do I want to change career?
– what do I really want to do next?
– should I change jobs or my environment?
– is it realistic to change?
– is it good timing to change careers (now, too early, too late)?
where do I start?

All these questions require attention and answers. However, the answers are not obvious when we are on our own. One can feel like running around in circles and getting nowhere as more time goes by, becoming weeks, months, and years. It’ time to act when frustration levels increase, often mirrored by a drop in motivation, chronic stress, and burn-out or health issues. Some professionals decide they want to stop going in circles. They decide to be coached and undertake a skills assessment.

A skills assessment to take stock and make a decision

During a skills assessment, we take time to understand, explore, analyse, sort, prioritise and prepare a concrete action plan. The objective is for each individual to move at their own pace.

There is no obligation to change everything straight away. Sometimes, it can take several weeks if all lights are set to green. Sometimes, the changes can take several months or years until different prerequisites are in place. Or, the initial idea must still be adapted to better suit the job market reality.

Decide to move forward today

It doesn’t matter what happens right away because the priority is to decide today define actions that will help you move forward. And even if your current professional situation is difficult, it will be more “bearable” with an action plan and a feeling of being in control of your career.

Depending on their situation, everyone will come up with one or a few directions out of a skills assessment. Generally speaking, a skills assessment will enable you to :

  • take stock of the competencies you’ve gained throughout your education and career, and define transferable skills
  • clarify your core values
  • define your objectives to decide what you really want to do next
  • outline some answers and ideas for the next phase of your career
  • make career decisions to establish a clear career strategy and action plan
  • feel confident and focused on your priorities.
