I want to be a better leader, but I am afraid…

leadership become a better leader afraid fear

“I want to be a better leader, but I don’t want my boss to think that I need to develop my skills…” That’s what I heard from a manager while he was enquiring about leadership coaching.

The fear of not being up to the role

This fear of not being up to a leader role is very common. Because nobody was born a good leader, with exactly all the competencies needed for a leadership role.

Some motivate their teams thanks to their charisma. Others lead their people using the competencies they developed over time. We see leaders naturally using their emotional intelligence to engage others. But at the same time, nobody was born with ALL leadership competencies, right? So it should definitely not be a shameful secret!

Leadership can be learned…

We believe that becoming a better leader can be learned. And we think it is a company’s responsibility to encourage (future or established) leaders to further develop their leadership skills.

How ? By supporting and encouraging :

  • a trust environment that enables managers/leaders to ask for development, without fearing that this could have a negative impact on their job or on their future career.
  • a training & development offer (development plan, training, coaching, hands-on experience) that will develop the competencies expected and valued by the company
  • a leadership development plan for each manager/leader (with a coach specialized in leadership and skills development).
  • budgets dedicated to development, because the development actions will not only help the leader professionally but also the company will secure sustainable performance and team engagement.

And what can a leader do?

  • Clarify your leadership objective.
  • Accept you don’t (and you can’t) know it all.
  • Ask HR/your line manager to support you in your development planning or look for the support you need (training, leadership coaching, coaching, assessments, books).
  • Invest in your own development (and support members of your team willing to do so).

Is leadership coaching for you ?

If, like most of the talented professionals we have worked with, you are serious about further developing your leadership skills and you are willing to :

  • improve your self-awareness to become a better leader;
  • find a solution to a business challenge;
  • motivate your team;
  • reach the objectives you have set for yourself or for your business (and clarify your real objective if needs to be);
  • set a new light on a problem you have;
  • understand who your stakeholders are and how to influence them;
  • be challenged;
  • take action where you have previously procrastinated;
  • progress in your career.

…then leadership coaching can really make a real difference for yourself, for your career, for your team and your business – or even all of them!
