Plant a seed…

If you feel like your career has been on autopilot for the last few years, yet at the same time you are not ready to take a big step and change it completely, you may want to consider this strategy…

Move your career forward by planting a seed today

Rebecca Zucker, an executive coach and writer for HBR-Harvard Business Review, suggests to answer the question : “What seeds do I need to plant now?”

She gives an example of how she applied this to her own career: Knowing that she wanted to work in Paris one day, she started taking French classes on the weekends and even had her resume translated. When the opportunity came a few years later, she was ready.

You could take actions like starting to take intensive English classes because you know you want to work internationally. Or looking for exposure in public speaking because it will help you hone your communication skills for a later opportunity, where this skill will be valued. With the additional benefit of decreasing stress levels when you learn a new skill; that is an interesting strategy if you currently find yourself in a situation where you are too stressed to make big changes in your career Career transition 5 ways to stay active on the job market during Coronavirus crisis.

Start small but start now

Reflecting now on where you want your career to go and commit to planting a tiny seed now, will help you move towards your goal. And be better equipped to make the move when timing is right. That’s (amongst others) what we are looking at during a career coaching programme. The motto is “get started, even if it is something small, but do it now”.

If you feel you are procrastinating again and again, make sure you get someone to help you articulate your career objective (not that easy), establish an action plan (easier said than done) and ensure you actually start with some small action.
